“Broken” is the third track off of my brand new album, Hustling in Place (NOW AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE!!!) It’s about how we’re all going through it, and it’s ok to not be ok. Everytime I introduce this song live, I say a small preamble. “When you have a broken arm, you get it fixed. When you have a broken leg, you get it fixed. When you have a broken head, you get it fixed. It’s tough out there. Please don’t be afraid to get help.” I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with my mental health over the years, and this song might be seen as a reflection at one of my lowest points. The song is important to me because it’s about not being ok, and also about finding solace in everybody else just trying to make it through, and we should be there for each other. “And they all, tell each other, they’re feeling fine. @rootsrockrevival entered the stratosphere this year. Healed by music and surrounded by love. Laughed and cried more times than I can count. Got down and dirty with the funk and balled my eyes out to some traditional bluegrass. So many wonderful new people and old friends. Thank you to @musicmasterscollective and @rootsrockrevival for creating a home for all of us aliens getting by the best we can. “Kissing Rings” is the second track off of Hustling in Place. You play along for long enough, finally there becomes a breaking point. I was lucky to reach mine early on, and I’ve been inoculated against a lot of shmucks ever since. My favorite line from the song is the very first, “How you doing, fancy felt fedora.” So many slimy business people I’ve met have worn fedoras, and also I love wearing my fedora, and it’s a gentle reminder to not take myself too seriously, because even people with the best intentions can be a little full of shit. “Hustling in Place” is the first and title track off of the record. I had a mantra for years. “Just keep working, just keep writing, it will work itself out…” but after so long I began to get very frustrated. I had been working hard, and I had kept writing. I felt like I was doing good work, but I was spinning my wheels. Writing this tune I was able to vent so much of the frustration I’d been feeling for years. “The ground keeps on shifting, I try to keep pace, but it feels like I’m hustling in place…” The piano part for this is one of the more involved parts I’ve ever written. I usually leave a lot of wiggle room for improvisation, but in this case, the notes are the notes. One of the reasons for a long time it was one of the more intimidating pieces to play live. I put a spell on you, because you’re mine... Written in 1956 by “Screamin” Jay Hawkins, “I Put a Spell on You” became a cult classic. Hawkins used to jump out of a coffin for theatric effect, and on more than one occasion, the lid to the coffin would get stuck, and he would literally have to bust out singing this song. 🎥: Taken at the @aebeerco. Happy Star Wars Day! George Lucas took a major risk using John Williams to score Star Wars. Grand, symphonic scores were falling out of style by the time the first Star Wars came out in 1977. Star Wars single handedly ushered in another golden era of larger than life cinematic scores for movies. According to the Wikipedia, the music from Star Wars counts “among the most widely known and popular contributions to modern film music, ... and features an assortment of about fifty recurring musical themes to represent characters and other plot elements: one of the largest caches of themes in the history of film music.” May the 4th be with you! The song was originally written by Pete Kuykendall and later re-recorded by the Cox Family. It’s hard not to get a little emotional listening to this song, even just the music. 4/20 is one of my favorite holidays. From USA Today: “In the early ‘70s, five students at San Rafael High School in Marin County, California would meet outside of the school after extracurricular activities had ended for the day. The group, eventually called the “Waldos,” simply for the fact they met by a wall to do their thing, made their official meeting time 4:20 p.m. and eventually started using 420 as code for smoking. One of the Waldo members, Dave Reddix, later got work as a roadie for the Grateful Dead, and the band helped to popularize the term, he told Time. Specifically, a flyer distributed by a group of Oakland Deadheads in December 1990 inviting people to smoke on April 20 at 4:20 p.m. did the trick.” Anytime a group of people decide to come together collectively and create a reason to celebrate, that is a good thing. I think celebrating a tradition rooted in an arbitrary time that a bunch of stoners got out of their extracurriculars to go smoke weed together is just as valid as one rooted in thousands of years of religious dogma, but that’s just me. Even though "Kissing Rings" is loosely based on my last encounter with someone who approached me with the “I’ll make you a star,” routine, I think it captures the attitude and essence of many of the shmucks I have run into over the years in the business.  I may not be exactly where I want to be in my career, but at least I’m doing it on my own terms.
